How To Choose The Right Exercise Equipment For You

Monday, July 7, 2008

Choosing exercise equipment can seem like an overwhelming task. So how do you decide what equipment would be the best investment for you? Here are a few methods to consider.

Join a Gym

Hey, why should I join a gym if I want to start a home gym? I am not suggesting that you join a gym and commit to years of membership. Find a gym that offers an introductory special. Some gyms will offer no sign up fees, trial contracts, and month to month memberships. The reason for this suggestion comes down to this: Before you spend $500 to $5000 on home equipment, you should try it our first. I recommend that you join a gym that has the following; treadmills, elliptical trainers, weight machines, resistance trainers and a personnel fitness trainer on staff. The fitness trainer can run you through the equipment and how to use it. Stick with it for 60 days and you can make a informed decision. You will know what type of equipment works best for you. Do not feel bad about joining a gym just to check out the equipment, especially if you join a month to month gym. They offer the month to month option just to get people to join and try it.

Find a Friend That Has One

Do you have a friend that has home gym equipment? If he/she is a good friend see if they will let you try their equipment. This will help in two ways.

First, your friend does not have any motivation to sell you on the equipment, unless he/she will take it personally if you chose not to buy what they have. Don’t ruin a friendship if that is the way they are. Second, you will have someone to exercise with. Try that out for for a month or two and see if it’s somthing you can see your self doing several times a week. If so research and buy the best machine you can afford.

Try Before You Buy

Are you good at returning things you don’t like? If so then take an equipment manufacturer up on their offer for atrial period. Two things before you do this: One do not try anything that you cannot afford. If you really like it you will want to buy it. Two: Make sure ithey give you at least 60 days to try it out. You need 60 days especially if you are not currently in an exercise program now. If you over do it and get really sore you’ll stop. This option also means that you will have to set the equipment up and tear it down if you don’t like it. You will also most likely be responsible for return shipping. Return shipping is a small price to pay for having the equipment in your home and trying it out.

A Few More Things To Consider

No matter which option you try there are a few other things to consider. Make sure you purchase the highest quality equipment you can afford. There is an old saying, by cheep and replace or buy quality and keep it. Remember, if you go to a decent gym they will have commercial equipment. Comercial equipment will last longer and have more features than the inexpensive equipment. Check out the internet for honest reviews of the equipment your thinking of buying. If you don’t find negative comments on a piece of equipment you should be suspicious. No matter how great the product is there will always be someone that does not like it. Last thing to consider- Start Excercising- You will feel better.
