Fit With Kids
It seems as though once you have kids, you will never again have the time for anything resembling a decent exercise or diet plan – We simply have no time. Between homework, making lunches, and trying to spend some quality time with your kids there is no time left for anything else. I can tell you without a doubt that this is NOT TRUE. I will give you a few simple ideas that can help you in your quest to remain fit and healthy and still get little Jimmy to soccer practice and little Sally to her piano lessons on time.
How many times do you say to yourself that if you had just an extra half an hour that you would be able to get in a workout each day? I used to say that all the time. I guarantee that after reading this article you will have at least that amount of time.
The first thing we need to do is change our perception of what it takes to get a daily workout in. If we can do that everything else will fall into place. Just remember to think like a kid. When we were young we never thought about exercise, it just happened.
My first scenario involves the typical parent who has to take their child to an hour-long baseball, football or soccer practice two or three times per week. This is a really easy one. I am sure that at the typical practice you are usually sitting there with four or five other parents talking about how busy you are and how you would love to exercise more. Next time you go to your child’s practice wear something comfortable and your running shoes and take a brisk walk around the park while practice is going on. You can also get the other parents involved and you still have a chance to socialize while you are walking. There! You just killed two birds with one stone.
Next is the “My child requires all my attention” parent. I know this one all too well – It is my situation too. The best thing to do in this situation is to get your child involved in your daily exercise program. If you typically go for a run at night and your child is not of the walking age yet, you can buy a jogging stroller and make the nightly run a family affair. Your child will love the free ride they get while you get a little incentive to push past your normal routine.
If your children are grade school age and the typical jog around the block will bore them to death, I have found the perfect solution. Tag – yes tag, the game we all played as kids, burns an enormous amount of calories. So you get to spend time having fun with your child and get your exercise in at the same time. Another good way to get the benefits of exercise and still keep your child’s attention is to jump rope with them. This is great way to get your heart rate up and burn calories. You can also play a game to see who can jump rope longer without stopping; your kids will love this.
The most important thing to remember is that with exercising there are no rules to what, where, or how you get your exercise in, just that you actually do it. If on the weekend you find yourself looking for something to do besides walking around a crowded mall buying things you don’t need, take your kid to the park and just have fun running around and chasing each other. Follow the example set by our kids and just get out there and have fun.
There is no feeling like being a kid again – and who knows, you may even get that workout in at the same time.
Please remember to keep it simple and always stay positive in reaching your goals.
