Book Review: Tai Chi Chuan: The Mantra For Health & Fitness

Monday, September 1, 2008

Written by the only Indian trained in the Beijing Institute of Physical Education, this book is a result of research and practice. This book is a unique contribution to the existing Tai Chi literature as it gives comprehensive information on the Beijing form of Tai Chi. Tai Chi Chuan means, “Supreme Ultimate Fist”. Historically, Tai Chi was developed as a martial art. Hence the reference to fist. In Chinese literature Chuan is also used frequently for the whole body. Hence Tai Chi also means, “Supreme Ultimate Body”. This book provides information on the two aspects of Tai Chi: the external and internal. The external form of Tai Chi stresses on strength, speed and stamina. The internal form stresses on smoothness, slowness and gentleness of movements, which is particularly becoming more popular as it is useful to the modern man, whose life is fast, stressful and debilitating. The book elaborates the benefits of Tai Chi, which leads to physical and mental relaxation. The history and different styles of Tai Chi are also discussed. The contents includes eight brocades of Tai Chi Chuan, Beijing form, six healing sounds, self-massage, Chi Kung, history of Tai Chi, diet and meditation. It also has a chapter where Tai Chi Chuan can be used for improved health & longevity. The focus of this book remains on Tai Chi practice rather than on the theoretical, historical or esoteric aspects of Tai Chi. The main purpose of this book is to get people interested in Tai Chi and Chi Kung and is really suited for those who would like to slow down and experience the present.
